Book - Days of Darkness: The Feuds of Eastern Kentucky

" Among the darkest corners of Kentucky's past are the grisly feuds that tore apart the hills of Eastern Kentucky from the late nineteenth century until well into the twentieth. Now, from the tangled threads of conflicting testimony, John Ed Pearce, Kentucky's best known journalist, weaves engrossing accounts of six of the most notorior accounts to uncover what really happened and why. His story of those days of darkness brings to light new evidence, questions commonly held beliefs about the feuds, and us and long-running feuds -- those in Breathitt, Clay Harlan, Perry, Pike, and Rowan counties. What caused the feuds that left Kentucky with its lingering reputation for violence? Who were the feudists, and what forces -- social, political, financial -- hurled them at each other? Did Big Jim Howard really kill Governor William Goebel? Did Joe Eversole die trying to protect small mountain landowners from ruthless Eastern mineral exploiters? Did the Hatfield-McCoy fight start over a hog? For years, Pearce has interviewed descendants of feuding families and examined skimpy court records and often fictional newspapeputs to rest some of the more popular legends. GaryWorld 'Appalachia' - My nostalgia watching the Centre College VP debate

Thursday night (10/11/2012) will be very nostalgic for this ol hillbilly. As the father of Mark, Myles, and Meridith who graduated from prestigious Centre College i am so proud. Family, friends, and I attended all three graduations of my wonderful kids in Norton Center for the Arts, the same venue for the VP debate between Biden and Ryan. My family spent a lot of good times at Centre. In addition to the kids graduating from there, we attended countless ball games, track meets and other functions as Mark, Myles, and Meridith all played sports for Centre. I can never forget the time when Meridith graduated that Centre's President came up to me and said, 'We need to put a cornerstone up for your family for graduating three fine students from here'. That was one proud moment for this ol hillbilly. Anyway i don't want to ramble on except to say when i watch the debate tomorrow night i probably will be shedding a few tears, remembering a few years ago sitting in that same hall watching three wonderful kids walk across the very stage to enter the big world we live in.

Aaron's Last Wish - A $500 Tip For Pizza- http://aaroncollins.org/

This is about the best feel good story i have ever seen on the internet Gary Holbrook-Admin-GarysWorld USA Aaron's Last Wish - A $500 Tip For Pizza Collins died on July 7, just three weeks after his 30th birthday, in a Lexington, Kentucky, hospital, leaving behind family and friends who took up his final request -- to leave a big tip. Go>> http://aaroncollins.org My brother passed away July 7, 2012. His final wish in his will, if he left enough money, was that we have pizza and give the waiter or waitress a $500 tip. Aaron never had much money , and he didn't have enough to make this happen, so I started a website and took donations. On July 10 we were able to make his wish come true for the first time. We think he just wanted to provide a random act of kindness and generosity for someone he thought was under appreciated; the kind of thing that would make a lasting impact they would never forget. If you want to keep his legacy going, please feel free to donate. So far we have collected over $1000 so we will definitely be doing this again, for another random waiter or waitress, very soon! Each time we have $500 we will do it again, even if that means going out to eat multiple times a day. Go>> http://aaroncollins.org
